Musical Challenges

For Harmonica: The solo melody is played as a single note line in first position. Match up the  harmonica tabs to the chord changes.

The Harmonica Cheat Sheets video course demonstrates where all the notes are for every chord in every key on the harmonica.

Learn how to best play Single Notes to get your best possible sound located in the Harmonica Essentials course

For Guitar

  • Seventh chords are cool.
  • Playing drums on guitar to drive the rhythm. Boom Chick, Boom Boom Chick.
  • Playing the bass line as well.

Chords, strumming and counting rhythms is covered in Guitar Essentials, Guitar Chords and Rhythm Guitar And Strumming.

Video Timeline

0:00 - Introduction

Today at Harp N Guitar we’re going to be learning how to play The Only Thing by George Goodman, that's me, on guitar and harmonica.

Seventh chords, bass lines and hammer-ons highlight the rhythm guitar part so we'll count that out and demo it slow.

Then we'll look at the harmonica - get the right key harmonica going and look at the solos.

I'll also show you the gear I'm using here.

But let's kick it off with a full run through so that you have something to jam along with.

1:22 - Full Demo

Once you've got a feel for the song come back here and play along with me.

4:52 - Guitar Lesson

Seventh chords are cool. Play them to a Boom Chick, Boom Boom Chick rhythm to emulate the drums and add some bass runs to fill out the rhythm.

11:33 - Gear Talk

A little history about my black Tak.

12:35 - Harmonica Lesson

Playing in first position, using a G harmonica, we'll tab out the harmonica intro and solo.

18:32 - Wrap Up

  1. Derek Hicks says:

Hi George Thanks for this lesson. I’ve got a Tak GN51CE which came with D’Addario EXP16 strings. These are too bright for my liking. What strings do you have on your Tak?

    • George says:

Hi Derek. Right now I have Martin Acoustic SP Lights. I play alot and sometimes quite aggressive. These strings are supposed to have good longevity. So far so good. Peace.
