Musical Challenges

For Harmonica: The full melody is easily played in first position. Learn the chord progression and the notes that make up the chords so you know when to be blowing or drawing and where.

The Harmonica Cheat Sheets video course demonstrates where all the notes are for every chord in every key on the harmonica.

For Guitar - Catch the Wind employs some alternate chord voicings and a great bass chord rhythm and gives us a few hammer-ons to work on.

Chords, strumming and counting rhythms is covered in Guitar Essentials, Guitar Chords and Rhythm Guitar And Strumming.

Video Timeline

0:00 - Introduction

Today at HarpNGuitar we’re going to be learning how to play Catch the Wind by Donovan on guitar, harmonica and vocals.

Catch the Wind has an interesting time signature as well as a great bass chord rhythm to cover on guitar.

Then we’ll look at some harmonica melodies and solos covering the intro, bridge and verse sections.

We can use a capo to change the key to match different harmonicas. This is what Donovan does and we’ll cover that too.

We’ll also talk some quick shop.

But we’re going to kick it off with a full demo of the song so you’ll have something to jam along with while you’re learning.

1:18 - Full Demo

Once you've got a feel for the song come back here and play along with me.

4:41 - Guitar Lesson

We'll learn it in the key of C and use the strumming and rhythm just like Donovan does.

13:38 - Harmonica Lesson

Starting with a C harmonica playing in first position, learn the notes to the melodies as well as learn the notes to the chords in order to relate the harmonica tabs to the chords.

22:09 - Changing Keys

Donovan did not record Catch the Wind in C but rather used a capo on the third fret putting the key of the original recording at Eb. There are also live performance recordings of Donovan using the capo on the second fret with the resulting key of D.

Change keys using a capo to better match your voice and the harmonicas at your disposal.

25:47 - Blooper
