V7 Harmonica Tabs for Cross Harp Blues

blues harp cheat sheet
In this session, we are looking at the harmonica tabs for the V7 chord when playing the Blues in second position or cross harp.
In the common Blues progression, the V7 chord occurs in bars 9 and 12 as can be seen in the Blues progression where D7 is the V7 chord for Blues in G.

When the V7 chord is being played by the guitar or piano, these are the notes that match the chord on harmonica.

Go back to the Blues Harp Cheat Sheet and look at the Cross Harp C row.
Under the V7 column is the D7 chord.
The notes of the chord are D, F#, A and C.

blues-harp-cheat-sheet-v7-harmonica-tabsThe C harmonica can’t play D7 above the first octave because that would require F#.
The C harmonica has a F natural, not F#.
In this case, the harmonica can play the notes to a Dm7 chord which are here on the C harmonica in the upper 2 registers:

-4 -5 -6 7
-8 -9 -10 10

The V7 chord is possible in the first octave of the harmonica by using bending.
Here are the tabs for the D7 chord in the bottom octave:

-1 -2b -3bb 4

In the Blues Harp Cheat Sheet, notice that the first line of tabs for the V7 chord shows -2b(b) in the second column which is the third of the chord.

A single bend on draw 2 is the major 3rd part of the V7 chord.
A double bend on draw 2 would result in a minor third and minor seventh chord similar to the upper octaves.

Blues Progression Chords in G

In the 12 Bar Blues progression, the V7 chord occurs in the 9th and 12th bars. For Blues in G, the V7 chord is D7.

Wrap Up

The V7 chord occurs in the 9th and 12 measures of the 12 Bar Blues progression.
The dominant 7th chord built on the 5th degree of the scale when playing in second position cannot be sounded in the upper 2 octaves but can be sounded in the lower octave.
Use the harmonica tabs to sound the notes that make up the V7 and Vm7 chord.

-1 -2b(b) -3bb 4
-4 -5 -6 7
-8 -9 -10 10
