Musical Challenges
The harmonica does not require single notes or bending.
There is one tricky guitar chord but other than that it is an easy rhythm guitar part.
The challenge will be playing both instruments together.
The Guitar Essentials, Harmonica Essentials, and Rhythm Guitar and Strumming courses can help with any difficulties you're having.
Video Timeline
00:00 - Introduction
Hey George here. Welcome to HarpnGuitar.com, the site that helps you sound great on guitar and harmonica. Today we're going to be looking at the classic Tom Petty song You Don't Know How It Feels on guitar and harmonica.
First we'll check out the chords and then the strumming patterns. We'll also need two harmonica for this one.
00:58 - Guitar Chords
You Don't Know How It Feels is in the key of E and starts with E. There is also A, which is the IV chord in E, and we'll be alternating between the I and IV a lot.
There is also D and maybe a new one for you - Bsus4.
01:53 – Rhythm and Strumming
The rhythm guitar is going to emulate the drums. We'll play bass notes on the first and second beats and then the full chord on three.
We'll also throw in a downstroke and upstroke on 4 -
Down Down Down DownUp 1 2 3 4&
03:27 – Intro Harmonica
07:57 – 2nd Verse Harmonica
09:55 – Second Position Harmonica Solo (A Harmonica)

Hey George, Great video here. Really appreciate that you’ve made it clear that it sounds good, maybe even better, by being perfect.
I wish I could see you play through the harmonica swaps. Can one musician play both the guitar and both the E and A harps?
-Bob
Hi Bob,
Yeah, I’d like to see me do the harmonica swaps while playing guitar as well. Not sure how to make that happen. You’d need a two harmonica rack but I haven’t seen one of those.
Peace,
George
