Gordon Lightfoot - The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald

"At seven PM a main hatchway caved in; he said, 'Fellas, it's been good to know ya'"
True story. Great lyrics, great melody.
As usual, I'll add a bit of harmonica. Let me show you how to put it all together.

Musical Challenges

For Harmonica: The full melody is easily played in first position. Learn the chord progression and the notes that make up the chords so you know when to be blowing or drawing and where.

The Harmonica Cheat Sheets video course demonstrates where all the notes are for every chord in every key on the harmonica.

For Guitar - Chords, strumming and counting rhythms is covered in Guitar Essentials, Guitar Chords and Rhythm Guitar And Strumming.

Introduction

I remember hearing a ton of Gordon Lightfoot as a kid growing up in Canada and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was one of the first songs I learned on guitar.
It has a beautiful, haunting sound with an easy repeating chord progression. I demonstrate the chords as well as the rhythm on acoustic guitar, add in some harmonica and then play a complete run through. Enjoy.

00:24 - Guitar Chords: There might be some new ones here but they aren't difficult.

1:32 - Time Signature: 6/8. This is counted 1 2 3 4 5 6 with accents on 1 and 4. This gives the song a bit of a waltz feel.

2:32 - Choosing A Harmonica - determining the key to pick the right key harmonica.

3:29 - Harmonica Tabs - starting with the main melody.

4:14 - Harmonica Tabs for the break section which emulates the lead guitar part.

5:21 - Putting it all together with a complete run through.

A D harmonica is required for this. Check the 'Recommended Gear' tab above for a great deal and free shipping in US.
