Hi and welcome to George Goodman’s Harmonica Cheat Sheets video edition.
My name is George Goodman and I have assembled a number of great tools to kick start your harmonica playing and musicianship.
In this video, I am going to briefly introduce each of these tools and explain how each is going to help.
These Harmonica Cheat Sheets get you playing the correct key harmonica and then teach you the right notes to play.
There’s more than one position when playing harmonica.
Know what you’re doing.
The print out charts here will help you figure it out.
The Blues Harp Cheat Sheet
The first tool is The Blues Harp Cheat Sheet.
You can play the blues in all 12 different keys.
The Blues Harp Cheat Sheet outlines the chords used for each of these keys
as well as the harmonica key to choose when playing in second position or cross harp.
So right off the bat, we aren’t in first position any more.
A large proportion of harmonica enthusiasts pick up the harmonica to learn the Blues and this chart will ensure you’re playing the correct key harmonica when playing cross harp blues.
Included with the Blues Harp Cheat Sheet is a set of harmonica tabs.
These outline the notes that make up each chord also referred to as chord tones in our 12 bar blues.
Then there are tabs for the 6 note Blues scale.
Scales and chord tones make up the notes that make up melodies and can be used for improvising.
The Blues Harp Cheat Sheet shows you where these notes land on the full range of your harmonica.
Harmonica Chord Cheat Sheet
Tool 2 is the Harmonica Chord Cheat Sheet.
The Harmonica Chord Cheat Sheet displays all 12 Major Keys,
the chords built upon each degree of the major scale
and the harmonica tabs covering the full range of the instrument for the notes of each chord.
The Harmonica Chord Cheat Sheet can be used for a bunch of things
* Most importantly to learn the chord tones on harmonica
* To help determine the key of a song
* To transpose songs to different keys
* To find particular chords on different key harmonicas
I will show you what these chords sound like and how to play them over the full range of the harmonica.
Pentatonic Scale Cheat Sheet
Tool 3 is the Pentatonic Scale Cheat Sheet
As mentioned earlier, licks and phrases are formed from the notes that make up the notes of the chords or the notes in scales.
A popular source for licks comes from 5 note scales called pentatonic scales.
These can take the form of major or minor pentatonic scales.
The Pentatonic Scale Cheat Sheet shows you where to find these tasty sources of inspiration.
Circle of Fourths and Fifths
Tool 4 is the Circle of Fourths and Fifths
Make sense of playing in positions using the Circle of Fourths and Fifths
and learn how to choose the correct key harmonica depending on the key and style of a song.
The Circle of Fourths and Fifths is a standard tool for learning music theory,
demonstrating key signatures and how the order of sharps and flats are added.
Learning keys, knowing which notes make up a key,
is a step along the musicianship path.
Getting familiar with the Circle of Fourths and Fifths will help tremendously along this journey.
Wrap Up
To wrap things up, here’s what you’re going to need for these tutorials.
A good diatonic harmonica in the key of C.
The rest of the information lies within the Harmonica Cheat Sheets and the Harmonica Cheat Sheets video series.
Here are the keys to unlock your harmonica playing potential.
Let’s get started.
Truly appreciate what you have done for all players looking to follow a proper path to confident playing.
