Taking Care

String Winder

A string winder is a handy tool for quickly winding and unwinding guitar strings.

They typically also have a practical bridge pin puller tool built in. This is very handy. You want to avoid using anything that will scratch the wood of the guitar when prying the bridge pins out and using the pin puller solves this.
More expensive tools also include wire cutters for clipping the ends off the strings.
Cheap string winders sell for a couple dollars and I recommend it mostly for the pin puller.

Removing The Strings

Start with the sixth string and loosen until you can't make a discernible pitch and then move to the fifth string,...
Once you have all the strings loosened, return to the sixth string and loosen it further until you can unwrap the string around the tuning peg and remove the string.
Continue loosening and removing the rest of the strings.
Once all the strings are unwound from the tuning pegs, pry up the bridge pin for the sixth string. This is where the string winder tool comes in handy. Avoid using metal. When you can lift out the bridge pin, the string can be removed.
